What is Haritaki?

Scientifically named as Terminalia chebula. Its a Myrobalan plant found mostly in India and some Asian countries. Haritaki also belong to the plantae kingdom and is an Ayurvedic herb.   • Haritaki capsules are also sold in the market. Taste wise, capsule is better than powder and fruit. But, it is likely that companies that sell Haritaki powder often undertake adulteration. So, it is advised to take a capsule only on doctor’s prescription.

Side effects and precautions:-

Ayurveda suggests that directly taking it’s medicines or herbs is not a good idea unless you have a proper knowledge. There are some side effects in every kind of medicines. Some has less where some has more. Ayurveda definitely has least no. Of negative points as it comes from pure nature.
  • Long-term consumption of Haritaki can be dangerous. If you are taking it along with blood sugar drugs then it is probable, Haritaki can react with it and harm you.
  • Pregnant ladies or the ones who are breastfeeding baby should not take Haritaki.
  • You must consult a doctor if want to use Haritaki on a long-term basis. An Ayurvedic practitioner will be most ideal.
  • Children below the age of 15 should not be given Haritaki.
  • People who have any other major disease should try to minimize the consumption of Haritaki.

Apart from India, Haritaki is found in Nepal, China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Malaysia. Terminalia chebula is a deciduous tree that normally grows up to 30 metres. The leaves of Haritaki face in opposite directions from each other. The size of leaves can be 7-9 cm and oval in shape. The fruit of Haritaki assembles a solid structure from outside, dark brown to yellowish in colour.
In India, it can be found in Himalayan regions, West Bengal and Assam. Haritaki produces 7 different types of fruit namely: vijaya, rohini, putana, amrita, abhaya, jivanti and chetaki.
Haritaki is a major ingredient of another Ayurvedic herb called Triphala.
Consumption of Ayurvedic medicines or herbs are 99% of the time beneficial. Side effects that are listed above are found in very less people. A normal person who doesn’t has any disease can take Haritaki without any question.
