The mucilage found in psyllium comes from the seed coat. Mucilage is obtained by mechanical milling (i.e. milling) of the outer layer of the seed. Mucilage yields up to 25% (by weight) of the total yield. Plantago-seed mucilage is often called a husk, or psyllium husk. Grinded seed mucilage is a white substance with hydrophilic fibers, which means that its cellular structure makes it attractive and binding to water. When absorbing water, the clear, colorless gel, with mucus increases in volume ten times or more.
