In 1970, the Indian Medical Central Council Act which aimed to measure the qualifications of staff in Ayurveda and provide accredited institutions for its study and research was passed by the Indian Parliament. What is Chia seeds??

Chia seeds are edible seeds of Salvia hispanica, a flowering plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae) native to central and southern Mexico, or to the related Salvia columbariae in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Chia seeds are oval in shape and gray with black and white spots, with a diameter of about 2 mm (0.08 in). The seeds are hydrophilic, absorbing 12 times their weight in the liquid when immersed and developing a colorful coat that gives chia-based foods and drinks a different gel texture.

  • Although safe for most people, chia seeds can pose a risk of choking. So be sure to use them carefully, especially if you have trouble swallowing.
  • Some people are allergic to chia seeds and may have symptoms such as constipation, itching, chest pain and swelling after eating them.
  • Some studies have found that increased ALA diet may be associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, while others have found that ALA may be protective. More research is needed.
  • Chia seeds can lower blood sugar and blood pressure. People receiving antiretroviral therapy or diabetes should measure their portion sizes to prevent contact.

Typically, chia seeds are small sharp ovals measuring 2.1 mm × 1.3 mm × 0.8 mm (0.08 in × 0.05 in × 0.03 in), with an average weight of 1.3 mg (0.020 gr) per seed. They have mottle colors in brown, gray, black and white. The seeds are hydrophilic, taking up to 12 times their liquid weight when immersed in water; they develop a mucilaginous covering that gives them a gel texture. Chia (or chian or chien) is more commonly identified as Salvia hispanica L. Other plants called “chia” include “gold chia” (Salvia columbariae). The seeds of Salvia columbariae are used for food.
In the 21st century, chia is grown and commercialized in Mexico and Guatemala, as well as in Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Australia. New varieties of chia ownership have been developed in Kentucky for cultivation in the northern United States.
